Poetry of Carlos Cortez: Read by Susan F. Field
Video Documentary: The Artist in His Studio
7:30pm
Last year, the community mourned the passing of Carlos Cortez, a vital creative force in the Latino community since 1965. He was first recognized as a poet, then as a woodcut printmaker. Central to Cortez's art was his Mexican heritage and its indigenous origins, as well as principles of ethnic pride, resistance, and political tenacity. Cortez's artwork has been represented by Beacon Street Gallery throughout our 23 year history. This exhibit marks the GRAND OPENING of Beacon Street Gallery at its new location in the Fine Arts Building. Cortez's four panel mural depicting the history of the labor movement in Chicago will also be on display at Beacon Street .

Play School
Opening Reception: December 2, 6-9pm featuring a discussion with the artists.
Play School is an exhibition of collaborative paintings by four artists: Jakub Jerzy, George Liebert, Eric May, and Ben Seamons, who have collaborated together in different combos: Eric and Jakub are the Huxtable Family, an ever-expanding universe of painted characters, which remix and riff upon a milieu of pop cultural artifacts that the two grew up with together during the 80's and early nineties; George, Eric, and Ben are the Woody Boys, a collective forged at the Ox-Bow Summer School of Art, which weaves together themes of generational experiences, their Mid-Western-ness, and the index of 'camp' culture. This show will exhibit a survey of works by the two collectives as well as present a new suite of works realized by all four artists, who share a rich mosaic of relationships as collaborators, peers, teacher/students, and friends. The opening reception for this exhibition will feature a conversation with the artists.
