March 2007:
  • A Feverish Progression
  • New Paintings by Bobbi Meier and Andrew Winship
  • "A Feverish Progression" will open March 2, reception 5pm-8pm
  • Bobbi Meyer's paintings search for order and elegance within chaos, playing out the frenetic reality of daily living. Metaphorical compositions entangle the viewer in a web of objective and non-objective imagery. The struggle to find balance and harmony is played out with elegant line work, rendered forms, and variations in paint applications. This work is developed into a multi-layered space for the viewer to navigate and discover their own connections.
  • The work of Andrew Winship is a balance between romanticism and skepticism; rich in metaphor reflecting on indecision and helplessness; full of faith in humanity with humor referring to the gravity of life's transitions and driving forces that remain out of reach but always present and affecting our everyday.
  • Through April 21st

  • "Chicago Voices Flower - Lily A Day" is a six-part Venetian glass mural made up of two large-scale murals, one twenty feet by seven feet and the other thirty feet by seven feet, as well as four mosaic adorned columns, each two feet by seven feet. Lead Artist Patricia Murphy collaborated with Associate Artists Pati Adachi, Shannon Coogan, Susan Field, Eric May, Ben Seamons, Chresten Sorenson, and interpreter Susan Wildman to lead a total of over forty apprentice artists in assembling the pieces over two years. Several of the apprentice artists also contributed to the design of the pieces, including Yen Luu and Meletius Tumer, who were involved in Beacon Street programming for many years, including Gallery 37, and are now attending college.

May-June 2007:
  • MEDICINE WOMAN/ METAL MAN
  • Joeseph Gagnepain and Sonja Henderson
  • Opens May 4th, reception 5pm-8pm
  • Joeseph Gagnapain creates artwork in his native area; working full-time on custom murals, found object sculpture, fine art, metalwork, signmaking, and designs. Gagnapain has created a name for himself in the Fox Valley; creating several public murals, monumental sculpture, recognizeable signage, while having a good share of great press. He presently maintains a painting studio and a metalwork space and resides in Batavia IL.
  • Sonja Henderson is a Chicago based artist who is a resident at Urban Gateways and Gallery 37. She makes ceremonial garments made from found objects that reference religious iconography and myth. The contemporary materials and primitive construction techniques used to make these sculptures evoke Afro-Caribbean and Native American spirit and existence. The garments and ritual objects become a link to the past, present and future.

September 14th - November 3rd 2007:
  • "RE-ANIMATOR: Conrad Freiburg and Iain Muirhead" is an open ended collaborative experiment where individual works are repeatedly exchanged to destroy or rejuvenate. We are interested in the impact of this process on our individual practice and the forms that might grow out of it.
  • "The Gray/Grey Series" features new paintings by Serene Wise. She uses simplicity through line studies to create and invite change through a visual rhythm.
  • "My work explores the minimalist tradition in painting. I am influences by a long line of practitioners from Josef Albers to Daniel Buren. I am endlessly fascinated by the power and eloquence of lines. As I vary the dimensions of lines, the intervals between lines and their textures, new spatial relationships develop. These relationships change again depending on which color field receives which overlay or underlay of lines. I am using both horizontal and vertical overlays in the series to attract light and create depth."

November 9th 2007 to January 5th 2008: "Native American Generations"
  • This show consists of three generations of Native American artists Elders (Sharon Skolnick, Joe Yazzi, Robert Wapahi, Carlos Cortez and Eugene Pine), Young Professional (Chris Pappan, Debra Yepa-Pappan, and John Joe) and Students (Kanowan Kayotawape and Ji Hae-Pappan). Guest curator: Michael Mitsch, associated with Trickster Gallery.
  • During our opening reception November 9th, 5:30-8pm, poet Susan Field (Pawnee) will read from her selected works, as well as a flute performance by Bill Conquering Bear Bucholtz.
